WHITE RIBBON
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN
Join us this White Ribbon Day, on November 25th, as Dunedin stands united in the global effort to end violence against women. White Ribbon Day, initiated by a men's movement in Canada in 1991 and adopted by the United Nations, is a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to foster safe, respectful relationships.
In New Zealand, the prevalence of domestic violence is alarming, with an average of 14 women tragically losing their lives each year to partners or ex-partners. Furthermore, over 3,500 convictions are recorded annually for assaults on women, and one in five women will experience sexual assault or interference in their lifetime. These statistics underscore the urgent need for community action and a steadfast commitment to change.
The Dunedin Collaboration Against Family Violence, and our partners, are proud to support the White Ribbon campaign, emphasising the critical role that community efforts play in addressing this issue. We believe in the power of collective action and encourage everyone to participate actively in promoting healthy, violence-free relationships.
This November, we invite you to engage in our community initiatives, including a special colouring competition designed to foster awareness and dialogue. You will be able to download the competition materials from our website or pick them up at any of our events throughout the month of November. Let’s come together to create a brighter, safer future for all.
